Skills of a hunter born and raised among hunters;

DUPLICITY Jo is a captivatingly, casual liar. Immersed in this secret world of hunting and bar-frequenting hunters, Jo grew up apart from both all of her same-age peers and other adults in her world, all of whom would have called her stories about monsters and hunters imaginative lying, in turn making her every interaction with the world outside of her home a lie. With over two decades in, and the last three years spent almost entirely on her own, it is second nature, and she often does it without thinking.

COMBAT Her fight training started at 11 after getting in trouble for ~~punching stupid boys~~ starting fights at school. She can hold her own, and she knows how to use being small and slight to her advantage. She doesn't have a bar where it comes to fighting dirty. Whatever takes your opponent down, takes them down. She'll be very interested in learning new combat styles here, esp with the new kinds of monsters and many types of fighters.

WEAPONS Jo has been training in different types of weapons since her father gifted her with a bow and arrow set as a child. She's comfortable with archery, knives, and guns but also capable of using nearly anything she can get her hands on as a makeshift weapon. (Sadly, she's never been trained to use a sword properly. Or a horse.)

HUNTER BARTENDER Raised in a hunter bar built by her parents, Jo has a motley assortment of skills that came from being steeped in this community for her whole life. Jo is a heartless clean sweeper at poker and pool. She's down for drinking matches with people twice her size. She read through and helped research lore for uncountable cases and books that came in, through, or were sent out. She's a steady, certain hand performing minor and semi-non-minor medical for others (digging out bullets, sewing up wounds, setting bones, treating burns, etc.). Some minor over-the-shoulder hacking knowledge.

NO CHIP CHILD Jo has a very different kind of relationship to hunting than most people her community. She has no chip on her shoulder or gory surprise monster death that got her or her parents into it. No one forced her into The Life. She holds no bitterness over her father's death. Nor is she holding any bitterness over the lengthy list of well-known hunters lost throughout her life after blowing in and out of the Roadhouse doors.

Through a forest black and bleak, and better experienced from the safety of any car, a highway stretches long and winding. If you look out those windows, you'll find that forest overcast, foggy, and in perpetual gloom. The shadows at the forest's edge seem to move right when your gaze moves from one spot to another. Red eyes can be spotted moving along the edges, and occasional screams from deep within each out.

But if you're wise and you keep moving, following only the road through those endless trees, you'll find the bright lighted sign of bar nestled at its heart. Untouched by the rustling forest around it, Harvelle's Roadhouse is bright against the night, with light shining through the curtains. Generally speaking, the only car you're likely to find in the gravel parking lot is a '67 Chevy Impala . Though, now and again, you'll find a bike or two parked beside it.

From the outside, The Roadhouse looks like any number of its ilk that graced the highways and byways of the late nineteenth-century American roads. Unlike the forest, there's a regular day-night cycle, sunny days and moonlit nights, midwest warmth in the air, and cicadas chirping. The weathered exterior has seen better days, and though there's no reason for that satellite dish on the side, it's still there. What matters is the sign on the door is always flipped to OPEN.

There are neon signs for drinks and the like, as well as an unmatched metal chair or two sitting outside on the cement for patrons. A hand on the door will find it weathered-worn by what must have been hundreds of hands. On stepping inside, as the last lingering shreds of the Purgeforest gloom are left behind, the traveler will be met with the scents of coffee and whiskey and, under that, gunpowder mixed with several rarer, more arcane notes that can't quite seem to be placed.

The interior, while equally worn down in places, is always clean. The bar is always stocked, though you won't find any top-shelf stuff here unless you bring it and stock it yourself. When the crew is around, you'll often find Dean tending the bar himself and Jo a little more seldomly so, even though her name is on the sign, but access is wide open for anybody to self-serve. There are bar stools, booths, and alcoved tables aplenty for whatever needs arrive with someone.

A flat-screen television is affixed on the wall near the bar, and the remote can typically be found on one of the wraparound counters. Nearby, an old-school Red's Rifle shooting game. Up the stairs, behind the short railing, a pool table can be found. Several feet behind it, a set of dartboards are attached to the wall. Next to it is what looks like a large chessboard with knives sticking out of most of the squares.

Somewhere behind the round wooden tables is a small alcove that houses a piano and a jukebox with a selection of classic rock music in the hundreds that plays over surround-sound speakers. Music is always playing, but it's been said to react to Jo or Dean's mood now and then.

On the wall to the left of the bar is a closed door with a sign that reads DR. BADASS IS IN. Anyone attempting to open the door will find it locked and unassailable to force. It will only be open to those who've been granted access to The Men of Letters Bunker.

It reminds her of Shatter,
The World That Already Ended,
and that is probably the worst part.  

Some people say it's the loss (of time, of places, of people) but it's not. It's the part where she gets up, looks out the window, and every single beat-up apocalyptic inch of it reminds her of Shatter. Right at the edges. The buildings are still nicer than it was, and there are no flash-BANG's, but it's worse here. Just out of the corner of her eye, it almost looks right until it doesn't. She can feel the tension waiting for the sound, especially right when she wakes up.  

The bed is empty, but she can't look at it, can't stop, can't belong to the memories. Not even if they are the only things she ever gets to keep. She gets dressed. She pulls back on that plethora of black: pants, tank top, bra, and underwear, and she could replace it all now—it's not all she's allowed—scavenge stores or bleach it off one of the bodies, but she still hasn't. She will. She...might.  

Heavy black boots and that beat-up black leather jacket. Her father's knife in the back of her pants. A gun beside it. Another in a boot. More knives tucked away. She braids her hair without looking at how long it's gotten, without thinking about it (or considering sheering it with a machete again; not yet; maybe one more stop before the Viking braids have to go). She never looks at the sheets. At the pillow. Not even one look back into the bedroom when she leaves. It's empty, and there's nothing in there for her but the roughest knife blade's edge of sleep, worse here in the quiet than in The Mousetrap.  

She goes down, and she does the only thing she can. She looks at the room again. She hasn't been here long, but the bones of the building are good. It hasn't been blown down, rained down, or burned down. It's got a brazen, bitchy refusal to be moved, and maybe that's why Jo didn't leave the third time she came back. Began stockpiling the stripped weapons and the alcohol she could find. Just like in Hell. Just like in Shatter. Started trading information. And then a few words. And then a few more. Until she couldn't lie about what she was doing, even if she didn't look it in the eye. Until people were coming by for drinks and guns, maps and meet spot, like it was regular. Like she could be.

  It's a place. It's a ghost. It's the mark on her bones, and it'll bleed her dry again.
 Add to the black hole in her chest that bides singular companion like checked baggage.  

Jo starts with the windows. Curtain up and boards down. Coffee on. It's two-fold sometimes. That challenge that says come fuck with me, see what you get until she's got blood and grass in her teeth again, but it's still someone else's blood on her hands; and the invitation that says to those who know how to recognize it, safe; safe; no one's managed to stop me yet, no one's going to, you can stop a second here, you can breathe a moment. Take a tumbleweed rest stop.

She could just tell herself that and pretend that didn't make it even more like Shatter.

APPEARANCE Jo is never going to look much better than this side of no one ever fed this child, did they? Jo Harvelle is, has been, and always will be quite small, even if she never remembers that she is and she takes up the kind of space that most of the time refuses to let anyone else quite realize how small she is until things go very, very, very badly as they are wont to do in the universe Jo's from and life Jo leads regardless of which universe she's currently in.

She's petite in scale and waifish in the build. Lean and lithe, most of what is not her bones is muscle, and a sheer refusal to let anything, even herself, get in the way of the job that needs doing and that she needs to be doing it. Jo rarely believes in second-thinking, calling for help that is not already with her, or retreating, which leads straight into the fact Jo is constantly and often around and about with bruises. || Jo's Physique ||

CLOTHING The meat and bread of Jo's wardrobe in skinny jeans, tank tops, and this skin tight long sleeve; which don't exist here. Jo's aesthetic in the Free Cities will eschew that way as close as she can get it. Her clothes will lean toward tight-fitting but able to move enough for knockdown drag-out fighting. Pants and shirts, fitted, maybe even under-bodiced at a point, but almost never skirts/dresses. Rugged, all-terrain boots with no or minimal heel. DEMEANOR Raised among gruff, brash, semi-violent, swearing, drinking, hunters, who were called her "uncles" and "aunts," Jo has been learning to make herself much larger than she physically ever was/will be. How to take up the five and six times the space of herself. How to be faster, louder, smarter, brasher, brighter, sassier, hit harder, drink harder, flirt harder, be more stubborn, more ballsy, more profane, more willing to make a dare and take it. Arrival Scenario: Free Cities

Suitability: Jo will fit in amazingly well in this world.

While she will think from the beginning that there's no place she belongs less, that couldn't be further from the truth. There's already a community of hunter/vigilantes in this world (and in the Horizon-Construct of her childhood home, of all places). It'll take longer to handle the whole "monster hunters who are monsters themselves." Still, through a long slow burn with it, she'll realize that while she might never totally be comfortable it, she can respect anyone committed to fighting that fight against the darkness.

After three years hunting full time back home, she's going to take to monsters roaming between the cities, needing to be put down, faster than anything else (with, albeit, an annoyed frustration about having to get re-trained to handle these different, massive new monster-types & weapons being hard to come by). She will easily slide into getting trained up for it, joining hunter-teams taking down monsters or a big bad. If that means those she loves and respects take up a big cause fight like the Free Cities side of the war, she'll be there in the trenches with them, fighting just as hard.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Jo tried to live the life her mom wanted her to, but — being the kid whose dad died in elementary, getting into fights at school by the age of 12, having too many Ellen weapons in her college dorm — it never worked out. Never over Jo's father's death on a hunt Jo was a child, her mother, Ellen, never considered there to be an alternative. After dropping out of college and returning home, Jo's fights with her mother worsened the more her mother refused to accept Jo couldn't (and wouldn't try anymore to) "just choose to have a normal life."

At 21, seeing it as her only option, Jo left the Roadhouse to pursue hunting on her own. The decision tore out a large piece of her, and it meant cutting herself off from the resources there. Jo chose to continue learning how to do the job out in the field alone. The path to learning 'fast, or getting dead faster.' Three years later, she hasn't regretted it, and she'd make the same choice all over again.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

Jo has a black-and-white hunter's moral code. She believes that monsters are evil and need killing. Raised in a bar that her parents built, which catered to hunters, Jo has always known about monsters and the cost of being a hunter (both the cost that usually makes someone a hunter, and the one that takes them out of the job, and world, too). Jo doesn't have a chip on her shoulder, nor holds any bitterness over her father's death. Everything her dad was, is everything Jo wants to be.

She believes the sacrifices are worth it. The people making them are the ones worth respecting/emulating. That it is the only job worth doing, life worth living.   She can be arrogant, dismissive, and judgmental when it comes to anyone not fitting these shoes. Even more so, if the person in question doesn't know about monsters and hunters at all.

Commitment when you give your word, and the integrity to follow it through. Bravery in the face of adversity. Loyalty to friends and family, blood and chosen. Independence, and self-reliance, at your core. Strength. A willingness to continue learning. Dedication despite hardships. A sense of humor (even if it's black as tar gallows humor). A competitive streak. The ability to hold your own in a fight. A good alcohol tolerance.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Due to the struggle with her mother, Jo has baggage about not being good enough to be a hunter, or belonging in that world. This suppressed part of her wondering if some part of her is 'broken,' since every other hunter would give their right arm for a normal life. Which further feeds into her fierce commitment, resentment, and reckless lack of self-preservation calling itself unwavering dedication that isn't always great in the field.

Even years later, when Jo started hunting with her mother, it stayed in there. A deep burr she can't pull out. Never fully certain this acceptance of her being a hunter, and her mother having her back in the field, wasn't a new version of baby sitting, or that hunting with her daughter only became an option to Ellen Harvelle once the Road House was gone. Especially as her mother still does a piss poor job of ever treating her like an adult.

Jo's interactions with the world have always been a front: having to lie about who she was and her life (her parents' jobs, other hunters, the world being a safe place) since childhood. She reverts consistently to lying and letting normal people make whatever assumptions best serve her needs at the time. With no siblings and no close friends her age growing up, she knows what that kind of relationship looks like, but hasn't had them. She wants it all the same and hates herself for it. She knows it's not possible, never staying in one place, and never getting to be herself. Still, she hungers for more than all you get from the job, and she hates that in herself.

What is their sign, and why?

 Strength, because Jo is very much the epitome of this card. The young blonde girl holding back a rampaging lion with her bare hands. It's a diametric of stark opposites in parallel where the power dynamic is being subverted. This is very much Jo's unwavering fight against monsters and the darkness always so much bigger and more powerful than her.

It's a stark parallel to the relentless fight she was willing to put up to be a hunter, no matter how young, how alone, or at the beginning, how untrained, too. She's also a steadfast column to lean on for those around her who are like her. Her life has shown her how to see through their gruff exteriors and what to give them to help them keep going forward, too.

Plans: Jo has done stints in a bar where a million multiverses opened from one door, hell's realm, a post-apocalypse, floating fantasy islands, and a horror movie on steroids -- so it seems about the right time to ~~inflict~~ flip in some Scifi Space genre on her.

In all seriousness, though, given her timeline and where she's been, Jo's adjusted at least survivable (after many years of struggle with it) to the fact she is the Multiverses Bouncy Ball, that probably isn't ever going home. I think the even small space and inability to leave it long will be challenging for her to adjust more and bring in some more skills. I totally look forward to getting to throw her in with the kinds of characters that get drawn in with space games.

Suggestions: I live for SciFi Space Operas, so really, it's hard for me not to fangirl every character you have and want to bring in twelve hundred. I'm excited about what I've heard friends saying who are in the game, and I can't wait to drop in and start getting my feet wet before I fling a lot of suggestions out and about.

Harvelle's Christmas Eve & Christmas Day 2016

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun

Jo never told anyone when her birthday passed, nor said anything when they passed Halloween, and Thanksgiving, drops with a simple decree they'll be doing Christmas. It's barely a week outside of their anniversary, that big brawl, and Thorfinn dying and coming back to them. The house is shaking, shaken, getting to it's feet and getting fixed back, but arrangements and decorations begin to appear, and Christmas to come to the house.

The upper house sees the most of it, but the main floor gets a handful of touches, too. A line of two of lit garland on the shelves that whole the bottles against the wall. A wreath on the front door. Paper decorations from Jacob's school, and the whatnot that Merlin finds amusing (like the piano getting Christmas decked). It's still a bar, and it's nowhere, drunk and fighting people might be immediately, but the low-grade acknowledgment is there.

About two weeks out from the holiday Jo talked it over with Amy and that same day invitations are given to the staff, as well as the occupants, to stay the night of Christmas Eve if they've nowhere else to go, and alike to come join the fun on Christmas Day, either way.

Hang around in a bar long enough and you're certain to pick up a thing or two about fights, and fighting, those who get into them, how they happen and even how often, like dominoes waiting to be knocked down, restless with the span and stretch from their last release, chafing until they find it finally.

Hang around a bar long enough after that and you might catch the rarer occurrence whereas the dominoes fall, they fall into yet other dominoes begging and waiting and near to fall, and others, and others, what seems almost, unending, and instead of a match setting off one spark, it becomes a powder keg.

Day 247 { sometimes life just slips in through a back door

Jo is sitting on the steps.

She was inside her bar only a little while ago, part of a morbid vigil of desperate hope where she didn't speak much and she cleaned even less. Everything in that room could be replaced except the one thing that had gone, and couldn't. But hung on the slender tendril of trusting in the multiverse, in the place that had stolen her a fourth time, and she knew.

She knew so much better than to believe in that. To hope, or rely on.
But which was worse. She was tired of the voices, and their eyes.

Jo's tired of the lights, which is why there aren't any, and the music, which is why she's somewhere silent, and she can't even appreciate the things she won before it. They are ash on her tongue. Rumors on the wind already. People arrested and in jail, one or two in the lake, several injured. She doesn't give a damn. Not one. None of that crowd, so she's sitting on the steps instead.

It's dark, and she's on the opposite side from where the picture portal to the living room hallway opens, balanced precariously. Small as she is, and can, when she wants to be. Back against the wall, knees up, but not to her chest, just making a small mountain in front of her, and she's watching the wall across from her, if she's watching anything at all.
